Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced a temporary interruption in water supply to several communities in Western Accra following damage to a major transmission pipeline.
The disruption occurred after a 500mm-diameter main pipeline supplying the affected areas was damaged during excavation works being carried out by AWERCO Construction Ltd.
The construction company is undertaking works on underground storm drains between Kaneshie First Light and Hansonic Junction.
According to GWL, the excavation caused the pipeline to burst, resulting in water flooding the entire trench and disrupting supply to customers in the affected areas.
The affected communities include Mallam, Darkuman, Kaneshie, Mataheko, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman Township and Chorkor, as well as surrounding areas.
GWL says its engineers and technical teams are working around the clock to restore the damaged line.
The technical teams are currently dewatering the trench to gain access to the affected section of the pipeline, while preparatory repair works have already begun at one end of the damaged line.
Management has apologised to customers for the inconvenience and assured them that every effort is being made to restore normal water supply as soon as possible.
GWL says further updates on the repair works and restoration of water supply will be communicated through its official channels.
