The Homicide Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters is investigating circumstances leading to the death by gunshot of a businessman, Fred Akowuah, in his Airport Residential Area abode.

The incident, which detectives are feverishly working around the clock to ascertain if it is a case of suicide (killing of oneself) or homicide (killing of a human being by a human being) occurred on Tuesday June 9, 2026.

Information available to The Chronicle from both family and police sources suggested that the deceased and his wife, who got married 15 years ago, having met in the United States of America (USA) are blessed with a 12-year-old boy.

However, a matrimonial issue reportedly led to their separation.

Prior to the couple deciding to stay apart, the deceased had allegedly fathered an eight year old daughter out of wedlock.

According to a family source, the development partly contributed to the frequent misunderstandings that engulfed their home.

The sources continued that, every effort from the man’s end to resolve the differences or dissolve the marriage completely received little support.

In the afternoon of Tuesday June 9, 2026 it is alleged that, following a reported ‘gentleman’s agreement’, the couple met at their matrimonial home near the Association International School, apparently to settle their differences.

Barely two hours later, there was a gunshot, culminating in the death of Akowuah. One of the people in the house allegedly reached out to the deceased’s sibling to announce suicide by the brother.

A Crime Scene Management Team, comprising Fingerprint Specialists, Photographers, Ballistic Experts (Crime Laboratory), all at the CID Headquarters, were despatched to the scene to commence investigation.

On June 25, 2026 burial took place after post-mortem at the Police Hospital in Accra.

When asked as to why the body was not kept at the morgue for a longer period, the family sources stated that in Akan tradition, this happens when it is the first time that parents have lost a child, irrespective of the age of the deceased.
