Police urged to take stricter action against trucks carrying timber logs after Ofankor accident

Police urged to take stricter action against trucks carrying timber logs after Ofankor accident

Mr Michael Teye has called on the police and relevant institutions to take stricter action against trucks transporting timber logs in ways that endanger other road users following an accident on the Ofankor Road that left three people injured.

The incident reportedly occurred after timber logs fell onto vehicles, raising concerns about the safety of transporting heavy loads on Ghanaian roads.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Adomba De Starboy, Mr Teye described the incident as painful and questioned whether the police were adequately enforcing road safety regulations to prevent such accidents.

He argued that the police had a responsibility to identify and stop drivers whose methods of transporting timber logs posed a danger to other road users.

Mr Teye questioned whether the authorities had failed to detect the potential danger before the incident occurred, stressing the need for proactive enforcement rather than waiting for accidents to happen before taking action.

He also criticised what he described as the tendency for public attention to shift away from major incidents after a short period, warning that such an approach could prevent lasting solutions to recurring road safety challenges.

According to him, the focus should be on implementing measures that would prevent similar incidents rather than allowing public discussions to fade without meaningful action.

Mr Teye further suggested that political interference could account for about 40 per cent of the problem, alleging that some drivers apprehended for road safety violations were sometimes released following instructions from influential individuals.

However, he cautioned against viewing the issue solely through a political lens, insisting that the institutions responsible for road safety must be held accountable for their actions and omissions.

He urged Ghanaians to adopt what he described as a “developmental lens” rather than a “partisan lens” when addressing national challenges.

Mr Teye maintained that prioritising national development and institutional accountability over political considerations would help the country identify lasting solutions to road safety concerns and prevent avoidable accidents.

The Ofankor incident has renewed concerns about the safety of transporting timber logs and other heavy loads, particularly the need for effective monitoring and enforcement to protect motorists and other road users.
