Christian Tetteh calls for stronger institutions and greater civic responsibility

Government dragging its feet on LGBTQ+ bill – social activist questions Mahama’s commitment

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Ebaanosen with host Ohene Kennah, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Christian Tetteh called for state institutions to be allowed to carry out their constitutional mandates without political interference, stressing that strong and independent institutions are fundamental to Ghana’s development.

Mr. Tetteh said Ghana’s persistent sanitation challenges are not due to the absence of laws, but rather weak enforcement and poor public attitudes toward environmental cleanliness. He urged citizens to desist from indiscriminately dumping refuse into drains, warning that such practices contribute significantly to flooding, destruction of property, and the loss of lives.

He emphasized that effective waste management requires close collaboration between government institutions and the private sector, while citizens must also take personal responsibility for keeping their communities clean.

On physical planning and urban development, Mr. Tetteh expressed concern over the growing number of structures being erected on protected lands, including Ramsar sites. He called on the institutions responsible for issuing development permits and enforcing planning regulations to be empowered to execute their duties professionally and without political pressure.

Mr. Tetteh also underscored the need for greater accountability in public office. He maintained that institutions mandated to investigate corruption, including the Office of the Special Prosecutor and other investigative bodies, should be allowed to operate independently and without interference, irrespective of the status or influence of those under investigation.

According to him, anyone found to have misappropriated public funds should be held accountable through due process. He added that public confidence in the judiciary and investigative institutions must be preserved to ensure justice is served and the rule of law upheld.

Mr. Tetteh concluded by urging both public officials and citizens to embrace responsibility, strengthen democratic institutions, and work collectively to promote transparency, accountability, and sustainable national development.
