The Assembly Member for Odawna-Sahara and Director of NADMO for the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Hendrick Noble Kinnah, has called on the Ministry of the Interior and national security authorities to declare an emergency holiday in Accra as heavy rains continue to cause widespread flooding and disrupt movement across the capital.
He made the appeal as several residents remain stranded in floodwaters, with major roads and communities submerged following hours of persistent rainfall that have paralysed transport and economic activity in parts of the city.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily On Monday June 29, Mr. Kinnkah warned that conditions on the ground were deteriorating rapidly, stressing that emergency intervention was needed to prevent further risk to human life.
He cautioned that movement within Accra had become increasingly dangerous, adding that even familiar routes around the city centre were heavily flooded and impassable.
The Assembly Member further appealed for urgent coordination from national security authorities, suggesting that a temporary suspension of work activities would help reduce congestion and allow emergency services to respond effectively.
“I will just advise that if national security can order an emergency holiday in Accra so that everybody will stay at home. Because if you try coming to Accra it will be bad for you. If you don’t know the situation around Circle and flooded areas, don’t come because you may lose your life,” he warned.
He also used the opportunity to call for long-term measures to address flooding in the capital, insisting that the current situation reflects deeper challenges in urban planning and drainage management.
Meanwhile, a fire outbreak at Odawna opposite the Adabraka Market has destroyed structures in an area already overwhelmed by flooding, with firefighters yet to arrive at the scene at the time of reporting.
The fire, which broke out on Monday morning amid torrential rains, raged for nearly an hour as surrounding homes and streets remained submerged. The cause of the blaze is yet to be determined.
However, The Ministry of the Interior has issued a strong advisory to the general public to remain indoors and avoid all non-essential movement following heavy rainfall that has caused flooding in several parts of the country.
