GRIDCo and ECG suspend power supply at Mallam and Achimota substations over flooding risks

Parts Of Accra To Experience Power Outages Over Planned Maintenance Works
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Ghana Grid Company Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana have temporarily shut down electricity supply from the Mallam and Achimota primary substations following severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall in parts of the Greater Accra Region.

In a joint statement, the utilities explained that the precautionary shutdown was necessary to protect lives, prevent damage to critical infrastructure, and safeguard personnel working at affected facilities.

They noted that floodwaters had compromised key transmission and distribution assets, creating significant operational and safety risks, hence the decision to isolate the substations until conditions improve.

Engineers from both GRIDCo and ECG are currently monitoring the situation and assessing the extent of damage to the power network, with restoration efforts to be guided by safety considerations.

The companies cautioned that further intermittent outages could occur in other flood-affected areas if risks persist, urging the public to remain alert and report any exposed cables, fallen poles, or hazardous electrical installations.

They apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured customers that power would be restored once it is safe to do so.
