Clashes erupted among supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Thursday, June 25, during a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, as tensions within the party spilled into the open.
The disturbance involved rival groups of supporters, with some chanting “Ken Must Go” in what appeared to be a reference to former Assin Central Member of Parliament and former presidential aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong.
The aggrieved supporters, many of whom were wearing red headbands, later confronted Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and attempted to block his vehicle as he sought to leave the meeting venue.
The situation quickly escalated, resulting in a physical altercation between some individuals and the supporters who were trying to prevent the Minority Leader’s vehicle from departing Alisa Hotel where the meeting was being held.
Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of supporters chanting slogans and expressing their frustration, although no official explanation was given for the protest.
The incident is widely believed to be linked to recent remarks made by Kennedy Agyapong concerning the party’s leadership and performance.
The former presidential aspirant recently criticised the NPP over what he described as its failure to operationalise the Afari Military Hospital. His comments followed reports that members of the Minority Caucus were denied access to the facility during a visit.
The NEC meeting was convened as part of the party’s ongoing efforts to assess its internal affairs and discuss preparations ahead of future political activities.
