Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Shamima Muslimhas taken a swipe at the opposition NPP over the government’s handling of Ghana’s recent floods.
Speaking on Metro TV on Thursday, July 2, 2026, during a discussion on the flood situation, Shamima Muslim acknowledged comments from some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on the government’s handling of the situation, stating that they can do whatever they want to score political points.
“I will not sit here in the light of what has happened and say that the NPP is wrong for playing politics. They can swim in the floodwaters if they wish,” she said.
She argued that Ghanaians today are politically astute enough to distinguish between genuine governance and mere political theatre, noting that citizens rightly expect competence from the NDC administration.
“I think that we are in a new Ghana where the average Ghanaian knows what performance is and what performance art is. But I accept that they expect competence from the government of the day because that is what we offered to do. And that is what President Mahama has willed us to do, to deliver on his mandate to the people of Ghana,” she said.

Shamima Muslim also pushed back against the broader tendency to place sole responsibility for the country’s recurring flood disasters on politicians, insisting that Ghanaians themselves share that responsibility.
“Often we put all the blame on the doorstep of the politicians because we say that they are the ones that hold the public purse. That politician is a representative of the people. The people have expectations and they make demands. It is all of us. It is not only the politician,” she said.
She added that until Ghanaians who believe they can do a better job step forward to contest for office themselves, the status quo will remain unchanged.
“And I say that to the extent that the politicians continue to make themselves available for the contest, because it’s a contest. And until people who think they can do better make themselves available to that same contest, what we have is what we have,” she said.
She rounded off by expressing confidence in the NDC’s competence to deliver for Ghanaians.
“I’m sure it is because they believe that the NDC is competent enough, because if you don’t have confidence in somebody, you will not call them to act. And so we will act,” she said.
Her comments come as Accra recovers from the devastating floods of June 29, 2026, which wreaked havoc on many communities in the nation’s capital.
