A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Thomas Ayertey, has challenged Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin to provide evidence to substantiate his claims and allegations against the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod).
Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN, hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr. Ayertey said allegations against GoldBod must be supported by credible facts, figures and audited financial statements.
He questioned the basis for calls for investigations and possible prosecution when, in his view, sufficient evidence had not been presented to substantiate the allegations.
Mr. Ayertey argued that GoldBod plays an important role in Ghana’s gold trade and contributes to the country’s foreign-exchange position.
He cautioned against what he described as attempts to undermine the institution for political reasons, stressing that national initiatives that contribute to economic development should be subjected to proper scrutiny rather than deliberately discredited.
Mr. Ayertey also criticised the Minority in Parliament and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over what he described as inconsistencies in their approach to accountability and governance.
According to him, political parties must provide facts and figures when making serious allegations against public institutions, warning that the credibility of Parliament and political leaders could be undermined if claims are made without sufficient evidence.
He further questioned what he described as the NPP’s approach to various legal and governance matters involving former government officials.
Mr. Ayertey maintained that political parties should focus on constructive scrutiny and allow the appropriate institutions, including the courts, to handle cases before them, rather than turning every issue into political confrontation.
He called for a more evidence-based approach to public discourse, particularly on matters involving state institutions and the management of public resources.
