Managing emotional insecurity in relationships: Muhammed Hussain Acquah shares key insights

Managing emotional insecurity in relationships: Muhammed Hussain Acquah shares key insights
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Emotional insecurity in relationships and marriages can gradually undermine trust, intimacy, and stability if left unaddressed. Speaking on Nyansapo Fie on Plan B FM, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, guest Mr. Muhammed Hussain Acquah shared valuable insights into the causes, warning signs, and practical ways of managing emotional insecurity in relationships.

According to him, emotional insecurity is characterised by persistent feelings of fear, worry, doubt, or instability within a relationship, often in the absence of concrete evidence to support those fears.

He explained that while emotional insecurity is different from broader relationship or marital challenges, it can often contribute significantly to such problems. He noted that painful past experiences, childhood upbringing, and a lack of emotional affirmation can influence how secure an individual feels with a partner.

Mr. Acquah stressed that some level of insecurity is common, particularly when people become deeply attached to someone. However, when these feelings become excessive, they can negatively affect the relationship.

He identified constant demands for reassurance, excessive jealousy, and an intense fear of abandonment as some of the key warning signs of emotional insecurity.

He further noted that individuals who grew up without genuine affirmation may struggle to accept compliments, affection, or reassurance because such expressions may feel unfamiliar to them. He added that social media can also worsen these insecurities by creating unrealistic expectations about relationships, appearance, and lifestyles.

On how partners can help one another overcome emotional insecurity, Mr. Acquah encouraged patience, intentional communication, and genuine affirmation.

He explained that offering sincere compliments, even for small efforts, can gradually help rebuild a partner’s self-esteem and sense of worth. He also encouraged partners to create room for each other to develop and utilise their natural talents and abilities, as this can strengthen self-confidence and reduce dependence on external validation.

Mr. Acquah emphasised that self-awareness and compatibility are essential when dealing with emotional insecurity in relationships.

He advised individuals who know they lack the patience or emotional capacity to support a partner through significant insecurity to carefully reconsider entering such a relationship.

He concluded that successfully navigating emotional insecurity requires emotional intelligence, open communication, patience, empathy, and a willingness from both partners to understand and support each other.
