Rev. Benjamin Boateng has warned that loose talk in the workplace can expose confidential company information, weaken teamwork and affect overall productivity.
Speaking on managing a loose talker at the workplace on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Boateng explained that when employees disclose information meant to remain within an organisation, the company suffers as its internal secrets become public.
He identified the distortion of teamwork, erosion of psychological safety, reduced productivity and damage to professional relationships as some of the effects of loose talk. He added that such behaviour can create a culture of self-preservation, making effective collaboration difficult.
On how employees can deal with loose talkers among colleagues, Rev. Boateng advised workers to be strategic, limit the information they share and use what he described as a shut-down communication system. He further encouraged employees to report such conduct to management or the Human Resource department.
He warned that the consequences of loose talk could include immediate job or career rejection, permanent blacklisting within an industry and possible legal action or financial liability. To address the issue, he urged organisations to establish clear confidentiality policies, protect sensitive information relating to infrastructure and decisions, promote transparent leadership to eliminate information gaps and cultivate workplace professionalism. He also advised employees to avoid individuals who engage in loose talk.
