One person has been injured, and 27 cattle stolen after gunmen ambushed cattle traders along the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway near Walewale.
The injured victim, identified as Aziz Agbang, sustained a gunshot wound to the back and is currently receiving treatment at the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH).
The cattle traders were en route from the Buipe Market in the Savannah Region to Zebilla in the Bawku West District of the Upper East Region after purchasing livestock.
While the exact motive behind the attack remains unclear, residents speculate that it could be linked to the ongoing Bawku conflict, which has previously resulted in armed violence along the North East-Upper East Regional corridor.
The Walewale area, particularly sections of the Bolgatanga-Tamale highway, has become a hotspot for armed attacks, often associated with the prolonged tensions and unrest in Bawku.
Authorities are investigating the incident as they work to address security concerns in the region.
