A Dutchman who has been arrested in Ghana for cocaine trafficking was on the wanted list of police in his home country, The Netherlands for a shooting incident involving him and his brother.
The Ghana police announced that 31-year-old Gilano Holwijn was arrested in Tema with three others following intelligence. The police retrieved a haul of 866 parcels of a white substance Holwijn told police is cocaine with an estimated street value of $6.9 million.
The others are Ghanaians, John Mensah Sabah, 41, Alhaji Iddris Haruna, 52, and Eric Tetteh.
According to the Ghana police, Holwijn admitted ownership of the packages.
Dutch media has reported that in late 2018, there was a major manhunt for him and his older brother. The two were involved in a conflict in Zaandam, a city in northern Holland, on the night of October 12 to 13 of that year.
According to the reports, a friend of the brothers was shot in the incident, after which the shooter himself was also hit. He then fled to the hospital in Zaandam, but was followed by the brothers. In the emergency department’s lobby, Holwijn’s older brother drew a weapon and began shooting at the target. Only when a second weapon jammed did they flee the scene.
