A 31-year-old female worker, Miss Mariama Gbemu, has died after a grader reportedly ran into her and two other workers at the Dzodze-Penyi section of the Big Push Road Project in the Ketu North Municipality.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, while the workers were carrying out their duties at the construction site.
According to a statement issued by the Ketu North Municipal Assembly and signed by the Municipal Chief Executive, Rev. Martin Amenaki, the incident happened shortly after workers had completed their routine morning briefing and dispersed to their respective duty posts.
Preliminary information from the Dzodze District Police Command indicates that the grader operator spotted the workers and stopped to pick up a colleague.
However, during the process, the grader reportedly ran over Miss Gbemu and two other workers.
Miss Gbemu, who was an employee of the construction company working on the project, sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
The two other workers suffered serious injuries and were rushed to the St. Anthony Catholic Hospital for medical attention.
Miss Gbemu’s body has since been deposited at the morgue pending an autopsy.
The grader operator, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested by the police in connection with the incident but was later granted bail as investigations continue.
The grader has also been impounded and is expected to undergo testing by officials of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
Authorities are expected to establish what led to the grader running into the workers and determine whether any safety protocols were breached.
