President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Cabinet has approved the establishment of Ghana Medical Equipment Services Ltd. as a subsidiary of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (Mahama Cares) to oversee the management, maintenance and replacement of medical equipment across the country.

The President made the announcement on Thursday, July 9, 2026, during the commissioning of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital.

According to Mr. Mahama, the new company will be staffed by specialised biomedical engineers who will supervise the use of medical equipment in health facilities and ensure that equipment is properly maintained.

“Cabinet has approved the Ghana Medical Equipment Services Limited, which will be a subsidiary of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund.

This will be specialised biomedical engineers who will oversee and supervise the use and maintenance of the equipment, and they will be the vehicle if the equipment becomes obsolete or breaks down beyond repair and has to be replaced. It is the Ghana Medical Equipment Services Limited that will be responsible and be the vehicle for replacing the equipment,” the President said.

He explained that the establishment of the company is intended to create a dedicated system for managing medical equipment throughout its lifecycle, including maintenance, repairs and eventual replacement when equipment becomes obsolete or irreparable.

The announcement forms part of the government’s broader efforts under the Mahama Cares initiative to strengthen healthcare delivery and improve access to modern medical technology in hospitals and health facilities across Ghana.
