Emmanuel Nii Adom Quaye, popularly known as Strika from the 2015 Netflix film Beasts of No Nation, has been sentenced to seven years in prison by an Accra court for stealing metal components and vandalising the Kwashieman pedestrian bridge.
The case followed a video that surfaced in late August showing Strika being confronted by residents while allegedly removing metal railings from the pedestrian bridge.
He was subsequently arrested and prosecuted over the incident, with the court imposing the seven-year custodial sentence after finding him guilty.
The development has generated mixed reactions among the public, with some arguing that the punishment is necessary to deter the vandalism of public infrastructure and protect lives.
The Kwashieman pedestrian bridge, like other public facilities, is intended to provide a safe crossing point for pedestrians, and the removal of its metal railings could expose users to serious danger.
Others, however, have expressed sadness over Strika’s situation, particularly given his difficult personal history and reported struggles with street life following his appearance in Beasts of No Nation.
Strika gained international recognition as a child actor after starring alongside Idris Elba in the acclaimed film, but his life after the movie has reportedly been marked by significant challenges.
His situation has previously attracted the attention of Ghanaian entertainers and other well-wishers who sought to support him and help him rebuild his life.
While the court’s decision has reignited discussions about accountability and the protection of public property, it has also prompted renewed calls for society to pay greater attention to vulnerable young people and provide meaningful support before they become entangled in crime.
The case has therefore become a difficult reminder of the contrast between Strika’s early rise to international fame and his current circumstances.
