Afram Plains: Newly commissioned 22-seater boat to ease NHIS access for island communities

Afram Plains: Newly commissioned 22-seater boat to ease NHIS access for island communities

Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, has commissioned a 22-seater fibre boat to support the delivery of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) services to island communities in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District.

The boat, commissioned at Zikpo Nyuinyui, is expected to enable NHIS officials to reach communities that have faced difficulties accessing services because of their location across the lake.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, August 29, the Regional Minister said the boat would facilitate NHIS registration, membership renewal and other outreach activities in communities including Dwarf Island, Digya Island and Dodi Island.

She said the lake had previously posed significant transportation challenges for residents seeking NHIS services and limited the ability of officials to regularly reach the island communities.

According to her, the new boat would help address the transportation challenge and enable NHIS personnel to deliver services to residents more efficiently.

Rita Awatey said the intervention demonstrated the government’s commitment to expanding access to healthcare and ensuring that geographical location did not prevent residents from accessing essential health services.

She added that the initiative supported the government’s broader healthcare agenda, including the Free Primary Healthcare initiative.

The boat is expected to strengthen NHIS outreach in the district and bring registration, membership renewal and other health insurance services closer to residents in the island communities.
