Como have made Champions League history after demolishing French side Lens 9-1 to equal the competition’s record for the most goals scored by a team in a single match.
The Italian side matched Bayern Munich’s nine-goal feat against Dinamo Zagreb in 2024, capping an impressive debut European campaign under head coach Cesc Fàbregas.
The emphatic victory also extended Como’s impressive run, having previously beaten RB Leipzig and Manchester United, with their only defeat in that sequence coming against Feyenoord. The result lifted them to fourth place in the league-phase standings.
Tasos Douvikas was the star of the opening exchanges, scoring twice to put Como in control before Nico Paz extended the lead to 3-0. Paz celebrated his goal with a tribute to Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, who died following a serious injury sustained in an on-field collision.
Como resumed the second half with the same attacking intensity, as captain Lucas da Cunha made it 4-0 less than two minutes after the restart.
Marc-Oliver Kempf headed home the fifth in the 53rd minute before Paz provided the assist for Douvikas to complete his hat-trick.
Substitute Mattia Liberali added the seventh in the 62nd minute, finishing from close range after racing through on goal.
Lens managed a consolation through Ruben Aguilar, who volleyed home from a corner, but Como were not finished.
Martin Baturina restored their seven-goal advantage with the eighth before 18-year-old Matteo Papaccioli completed the historic rout in stoppage time.
Papaccioli’s goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded following a VAR review.
The result sees Como join Bayern Munich in the Champions League record books for the most goals scored by a team in a single match.
However, Feyenoord still hold the record for the biggest victory in European Cup history, having beaten Icelandic side KR Reykjavik 12-2 in September 1969.
Como also set a new Champions League record for the biggest away victory, underlining the remarkable nature of their nine-goal demolition of Lens.
