The Essipong Stadium in Sekondi has received temporary approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to host Ghana’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Somalia.
Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku announced the development on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a meeting between the GFA Executive Council and Parliament’s Select Committee on Sports.
The Black Stars are scheduled to host Somalia in the first leg on November 12 before travelling to Accra for the return fixture on November 16.
The approval follows renovation works at the Essipong Stadium as authorities work to upgrade its facilities to meet international football standards.
The stadium recently received CAF clearance to host the Black Queens’ Olympic Games qualifier against Mauritius, further signalling its gradual return to international football.
Meanwhile, Somalia will host their home fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium after securing permission to use the facility due to the absence of a CAF-approved stadium in their country.
Ghana will approach the two-legged encounter under pressure following defeats in their opening two matches, which have left them bottom of Group C without a point.
The double-header against Somalia presents the Black Stars with a vital opportunity to revive their qualifying campaign and keep their hopes of reaching the 2027 AFCON alive.
