Emotional infidelity goes beyond physical or sexual involvement, as sharing affection, care and emotions meant for a spouse with someone else can also constitute betrayal, Lady Elizabeth Kesewaa Nortey has cautioned.
Speaking on managing the effects of marital infidelity on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Lady Elizabeth explained that marital infidelity takes different forms and should not be viewed only in terms of physical contact.
She described emotional infidelity as a situation where a partner shares their emotions with another person instead of their spouse. She added that the care and affection that should be directed towards one’s partner may instead be given to someone outside the marriage.
On the effects of marital infidelity in schools, Lady Elizabeth noted that teachers experiencing anger, bitterness and disappointment arising from marital challenges may sometimes transfer their frustrations to pupils by beating them.
She further explained that a teacher might treat a pupil unfairly because the pupil’s name resembles that of a partner who betrayed them, potentially affecting the pupil’s experience in school.
Lady Elizabeth described marriage as a divine institution and a blessing, expressing the view that the devil seeks to undermine it. She urged couples to hold firmly to their marriages, emphasising that marriage is a good institution and encouraging partners to remain committed so that God may bless their unions.
