Calls for tougher sanctions against teachers who abuse students

Calls for tougher sanctions against teachers who abuse students

Calls are growing for stricter disciplinary measures and stronger supervision in Ghana’s schools to address indiscipline and teacher misconduct.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuonsem, hosted by Obidehye Kofi Sekyi, NPP Tema Central Communications Member Richard Anning said restoring discipline in schools must go beyond public discussions and be backed by clear rules and enforceable sanctions.

He stressed that cases of sexual abuse and other forms of misconduct involving teachers and students must be addressed comprehensively to protect both male and female students.

He proposed the introduction and strict enforcement of professional licensing for teachers, suggesting that educators found guilty of serious misconduct should have their licences withdrawn and be blacklisted for a specified period, such as five years.

He added that such teachers should be required to undergo a conduct examination before their licences are reinstated, insisting that established professional standards must be enforced consistently.

Mr Anning also called for stronger supervision within the education sector, proposing that district education directors be given greater authority to monitor headteachers and address disciplinary issues in senior high schools.

He explained that a clear chain of responsibility, similar to the system used in school dormitories, could help ensure that problems are addressed promptly at the appropriate level before escalating to higher authorities.

He further urged the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service to strengthen school inspections to assess student discipline, teachers’ conduct and the overall management of educational institutions.

He maintained that restoring discipline requires practical action, effective monitoring and clear punishments for misconduct, rather than merely discussing the problem without implementing measures to protect students.
