Matthew Kitcher, a member of the NDC Communications Team, has criticised comments made by Mr Ibrahim Atibilleh regarding illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s EBAANOSEN show hosted by Ohene Kinnah, Mr Kitcher explained that mining itself is not illegal, provided it is conducted properly and does not pollute water bodies.
He expressed confidence that the appropriate authorities would invite Mr Atibilleh and caution him over the remarks, suggesting that he may have made the comments out of excitement.
Mr Kitcher stressed that the comments were inconsistent with the NDC’s position on the fight against galamsey, adding that Mr Atibilleh was not above President John Dramani Mahama, who he said was committed to combating illegal mining.
Comparing the current administration’s efforts with those of the previous NPP government, Mr Kitcher maintained that there had been improvements in the fight against galamsey, which he said demonstrated President Mahama’s commitment to addressing the menace.
