Athletic Bilbao forward Inaki Williams has announced his retirement from international football with the Ghana national team.
The 32-year-old made the announcement in an emotional statement, saying he believes the time has come to bring his journey with the Black Stars to an end.
Williams said he leaves the national team “happy, proud” and with the peace of mind that he gave everything whenever he wore the Ghana shirt.
“I feel the time has come to bring my journey with the Ghana national team to an end,” Williams stated.
The forward, who made his Black Stars debut in 2022, said representing Ghana meant much more to him than football, describing the experience as an opportunity to reconnect with his roots and feel the pride of representing his country.
“Ghana has given me much more than football. It has allowed me to come back home, feel even closer to my roots and experience the enormous pride of representing my country and wearing this flag on my chest,” he said.
Williams thanked everyone who supported him throughout his international career and expressed appreciation for the love he received from Ghanaians.
He also pledged to continue supporting the Black Stars following his retirement.
“Ghana will always be a part of me. I will continue supporting the Black Stars as one of you, wherever I am,” he added.
Williams ends his Black Stars career after representing Ghana at major international tournaments, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
He concludes his statement with a message that reflects his continued connection to the country: “Medaase. Always Ghana.”
