CAF restores AFCON to traditional two-year cycle

CAF Postpones 2023 AFCON To January 2024

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) Executive Committee has unanimously approved a return to the traditional two-year cycle for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The decision reverses a previous arrangement adopted by the continental football governing body last year, which proposed changing the tournament from a biennial competition to one held every four years.

CAF announced the latest decision on Friday, October 30, following a meeting of its Executive Committee.

The resolution means AFCON will once again be staged every two years, ending the proposed four-year cycle.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe had earlier indicated that the governing body would reconsider the decision to extend the tournament cycle.

Speaking at the CAF Strategy Conference in Cabo Verde, held from October 7 to 9, 2026, Motsepe disclosed that the Executive Committee would revisit the arrangement adopted the previous year.

The latest decision confirms the return to the biennial format, which has traditionally defined Africa’s premier national team football competition.

AFCON remains one of the continent’s biggest sporting events, bringing together national teams from across Africa to compete for the continental title.
