Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has issued a stern warning to newly recruited parliamentary security officers, cautioning them against reporting for duty under the influence of alcohol.
He said any officer found smelling of alcohol while on duty would face disciplinary measures, with a third offence resulting in dismissal from Parliament.
Mr Bagbin gave the warning on Friday, August 29, during the passing-out ceremony of 69 newly recruited Parliamentary Assistant Security Guards.
He charged the officers to uphold discipline, professionalism and vigilance as they take on the responsibility of protecting Parliament and its facilities.
According to the Speaker, security officers must draw a clear line between their social lives and official duties, stressing that irresponsible conduct could compromise the security of the Parliamentary precincts.
He further directed the officers to strictly enforce access-control measures and adhere to established security protocols to prevent unauthorised access and protect Parliament.
“No alcoholism. Once we come and we smell alcohol from you, I can assure you, you’ll be disciplined. And on the third occasion, you’ll be booted out,” he warned.
Mr Bagbin stressed that the protection of Ghana’s democracy depends not only on the institutions that uphold it but also on the discipline and professionalism of those entrusted with securing them.
