Illicit drug addiction poses a serious threat to personal health, emotional well-being and the stability of relationships and families.
Speaking on Nyansapo Fie on Plan B FM, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Muhammed Hussain Acquah stressed that managing addiction requires a combination of spiritual discipline, personal commitment and practical intervention.
According to him, true recovery involves abstaining from activities prohibited by God while also seeking the appropriate professional support and treatment needed to overcome substance dependency and rebuild a fulfilling life.
He explained that when substance dependency enters a relationship or marriage, its effects can quickly spread beyond the individual and negatively impact both partners and the stability of the home.
Drug addiction can alter a person’s behaviour, priorities and decision-making, often causing the addiction to take precedence over the needs and well-being of their partner and family.
The resulting challenges can lead to frequent emotional and marital conflicts, particularly as couples struggle with mood swings, financial difficulties and broken promises. Over time, these persistent disagreements can erode the foundation of the relationship, leaving both partners emotionally exhausted and increasingly distant.
Acquah further identified the breakdown of trust as one of the major consequences of drug addiction in relationships. He noted that secrecy, denial and deceptive behaviour can become common as an addicted partner attempts to conceal their substance use, causing mutual confidence to gradually disappear.
He stressed that rebuilding trust after addiction can be extremely difficult and requires honesty, accountability, commitment and sustained support.
He also pointed to the neglect of domestic, parental and financial responsibilities as another serious consequence of addiction. In some cases, these challenges can escalate into domestic violence and create serious safety concerns within the home.
According to him, overcoming illicit drug addiction is therefore not only an individual achievement but also an important step towards restoring trust, preventing violence and rebuilding healthy and stable families.
