The North East Regional Police Command has arrested four suspects and intercepted 118 bags of cocoa beans weighing 11,800 kilogrammes allegedly being transported to neighbouring Togo.
The interception occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2026, at the Bunkpurugu Police Snap Check Point after police received intelligence about a Hyundai Rhino truck, with registration number AS-3272-25, heading towards the Togo border under suspicious circumstances.
The vehicle was reportedly loaded with plantain and cocoa and was intercepted by a police patrol team.
A subsequent search conducted at the Customs Office by a joint security team comprising the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Defence Intelligence, GRA Customs Division and National Security uncovered the cocoa beans concealed beneath the plantain.
According to the police, the plantain was being used as a decoy to conceal the cocoa consignment, which was suspected to be destined for Togo through the Bunkpurugu-Togo border.
The suspects have been identified as 35-year-old Dickson Asante, the driver of the truck; 19-year-old Gideon Tab, the mate; 22-year-old Mohammed Mumin; and 23-year-old Ernestina Akugre, who claimed ownership of the consignment.
The four suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations.
They are expected to be put before court to face the full rigours of the law.
