Emotional insecurity: Rev. Benjamin Boateng shares key lessons on building confidence

Emotional insecurity: Rev. Benjamin Boateng shares key lessons on building confidence

Emotional insecurity and low self-esteem can silently prevent people from reaching their full potential, according to Rev. Benjamin Boateng.

Speaking on Nyansapɔ Fie on Plan B FM with host Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Boateng explained that insecurity can operate as a hidden mechanism within individuals, often surfacing when they are about to pursue opportunities or take steps they are capable of achieving.

He noted that emotional insecurity often has its roots in childhood, particularly when children are repeatedly scolded, criticised or made to feel inadequate.

According to him, constant negative remarks and harsh treatment during a child’s formative years can cause the child to become timid, withdrawn and uncertain of their abilities later in life.

Rev. Boateng therefore urged parents to adopt a balanced approach to discipline and child development.

He stressed that while children must be corrected when they misbehave, parents should equally recognise, encourage and reward good behaviour and achievements. He also cautioned parents against comparing their children to others, emphasising that every child has unique abilities, talents and a different pace of development.

For adults struggling with self-doubt, Rev. Boateng encouraged them not to allow the failures of others to determine their own expectations in life.

He explained that someone else’s failure in business, relationships or any other area does not necessarily mean another person will experience the same outcome.

According to him, constantly dwelling on the negative experiences of others can fuel fear and insecurity, preventing people from taking the necessary steps towards achieving their goals.

Rev. Boateng emphasised that overcoming emotional insecurity requires both intentional parenting and personal courage.

He urged parents to be mindful of how their words and actions shape their children’s confidence, while encouraging individuals to believe in their abilities, overcome fear and take advantage of opportunities that come their way.

He stressed that building a confident generation begins with creating an environment where children are corrected with love, encouraged when they succeed and allowed to develop their individual strengths without unnecessary comparison.
