A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Darkwa, has called for due process and the presumption of innocence to be upheld in the case involving Dennis Miracles Aboagye, stressing that every accused person is innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Mr. Darkwa reacted to recent developments following the arrest and detention of Mr. Aboagye over an alleged GH¢55 million fraud case.
He urged security agencies to conduct thorough and professional investigations, emphasizing that anyone suspected of wrongdoing should be prosecuted through the courts rather than being subjected to what he described as political persecution.
Mr. Darkwa criticised President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of appearing unconcerned about what he believes is the political persecution of Mr. Aboagye. He also expressed concern over what he described as excessive bail conditions, arguing that such practices should be discouraged.
According to him, if the current government fails to uphold the rule of law, it could set a precedent that may be repeated by future administrations. He warned that such a cycle would not be in the best interest of Ghana’s democratic development.
“If they believe he has committed an offence, they should take him to court. What is happening is against the law, and the country is heading down a path that will not augur well for its development,” he stated.
Mr. Darkwa also called on the Executive Director of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Raymond Archer, to exercise caution in the discharge of his duties. He warned that if what he described as political persecution continues, future governments may adopt similar approaches, further deepening political divisions in the country.
