A Social Worker at Tema Urban Hospital, Bernice Rufus, has called for stronger protection of children against abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation as Ghana marks International Child Protection Week.
According to her, children remain one of the most vulnerable groups in society and are often subjected to various forms of maltreatment, including being made to undertake work that is inappropriate for their age.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nyansapo Fie programme hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Madam Rufus noted that some parents, guardians, and members of society continue to exploit children by assigning them tasks meant for adults, a practice she described as harmful to their development and well-being.
She also expressed concern about the growing cases of child abandonment, describing it as a major challenge affecting many children in society.
Madam Rufus urged parents, guardians, and the general public to report cases of child abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation to the Department of Social Welfare or the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) to ensure that the rights and welfare of children are protected.
She further encouraged parents of children living with disabilities not to hide them from society but rather provide them with education and opportunities to develop their full potential. She also appealed to the public to report all forms of abuse against children with disabilities.
She stressed that protecting children is a collective responsibility and called on all stakeholders to work together to create a safe and supportive environment for every child.
