A member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Tema West Constituency, James Tamakloe, has described the government’s planned SIM re-registration exercise as unnecessary and a waste of time and resources.
According to him, the funds earmarked for the exercise could be better invested in addressing more pressing national challenges rather than repeating a process that has already been undertaken and is currently serving its intended purpose.
His remarks follow an announcement by the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, who disclosed that government is making significant progress towards the commencement of a nationwide SIM re-registration exercise expected to begin before the end of 2026.
The minister explained that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen Ghana’s digital identity system, enhance telecommunications security, and combat fraud within the mobile network sector. He noted that preparations are currently underway, with the necessary legal and institutional frameworks being put in place to ensure a smooth rollout.
However, speaking on Nkosuo Nsem on Plan B FM, hosted by Kofi Sekyi, Tamakloe dismissed the proposed exercise as unnecessary, arguing that it would subject many Ghanaians to the inconvenience of long queues, delays, and avoidable frustration.
He questioned the rationale behind undertaking another SIM registration exercise when a similar process had already been completed nationwide.
Tamakloe therefore called on the government and the Communications Ministry to reconsider the decision and instead focus resources on addressing more urgent issues confronting the country.
