The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has dismissed as false a widely circulated notice purportedly issued by Cambodian immigration authorities directing Africans, including Ghanaians, to leave Cambodia or face arrest and imprisonment.

In a press release issued on Friday, May 29, 2026, the Ministry stated that the document circulating on social and traditional media platforms is fake and was not issued by any state institution in Cambodia.

According to the Ministry, the fake circular claimed that citizens of Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African countries had been ordered to leave Cambodia by May 31, 2026, or risk arrest, imprisonment, and financial penalties for immigration violations.

The Ministry said diplomatic engagements with Cambodian authorities confirmed that the notice is “absolutely fake,” adding that Cambodia’s General Department of Immigration has also officially described the document as “completely untrue.”

The public and media organisations have therefore been advised to disregard the discredited document and avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing fear and panic among affected persons and their families.

Meanwhile, the Ministry disclosed that some Ghanaians living in Cambodia had earlier expressed interest in voluntarily returning home. It revealed that through Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, which is concurrently accredited to Cambodia, the government has already facilitated the evacuation of 85 Ghanaians between March and May 2026.

The Ministry further indicated that arrangements are underway to assist an additional 76 Ghanaians currently in Cambodia who have also expressed the desire to return to Ghana.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and safety of Ghanaians abroad and urged the public to rely solely on official sources for information concerning Ghanaian nationals overseas.
