A group calling itself Concerned NPP Members in the Abetifi Constituency has accused some constituency executives of manipulating the party’s ongoing internal elections, describing the process as unfair and divisive.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuo Nsem with Ohene Kinnah, the Convener of the group, Bright Yeboah, popularly known as Ras Obama, said the reorganisation exercise of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), which is expected to strengthen the party, is instead creating frustration and apathy among members in the constituency.
According to him, the polling station and Electoral Area elections, which should have been conducted freely and fairly, have allegedly been used by certain constituency executives as a means of settling personal scores with party members they either disagree with or do not align with politically.
He alleged that after manipulating the polling station elections to the disadvantage of many supporters, the same executives have now extended the alleged irregularities to the Electoral Area elections by distributing nomination forms only to their preferred candidates.
Mr. Yeboah claimed that several party faithful interested in contesting for Electoral Area executive positions have been denied access to forms, a situation he believes is deliberately aimed at discouraging grassroots supporters and deepening political apathy within the constituency.
The group further alleged that supporters of the NPP flagbearer and other presidential aspirants, who did not back the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, during the party’s presidential primaries, are being sidelined in the ongoing electoral process.
The Concerned NPP Members are therefore calling on the party’s national executives, regional executives, Council of Elders, election committee, and the NPP flagbearer to immediately intervene in the matter.
They are demanding the cancellation of the polling station elections conducted in the constituency and are also calling for the Electoral Area executive elections to be suspended until what they describe as “independent people” are brought in to supervise the process.
