President John Dramani Mahama has praised the Managing Director of Ghana Water Limited (GWL), Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, popularly known as Garlus, for his sustained efforts in getting the Damongo Water Project underway.
The President made the remarks during the 50th-anniversary celebration of the Gonjaland Youth Association (GLYA) in Buipe last weekend.
The GLYA holds its annual rotational congresses during Easter, bringing together sons and daughters of the land to socialize and discuss the association’s future direction. This year, the Association marked its 50th anniversary in Buipe, located in the Central Gonja District of the Savannah Region.
Among the key challenges highlighted by the President was the long-standing Damongo Water Project.
“Regarding access to safe water, we know it is a right, not a privilege. I want to thank my younger brother for the very good work he has done; we did not send him to the Ghana Water Company for nothing. He has done all the legwork, and I am happy to announce that just last week, the Minister for Finance signed the commitment letter for the Damongo Water Supply System to start. Garlus, well done, thank you very much,” President Mahama said.
The announcement brought relief to the entire Gonjaland, where the Damongo water crisis has been a long-standing concern. Garlus had previously contributed to the Fufulso-Damongo-Sawla road project between 2010 and 2015 and is now leading efforts to deliver the Damongo Water Project.
Since assuming office as MD of Ghana Water Limited in January 2025, Hon. Adam Mutawakilu has implemented significant reforms in finance, administration, and operations. He has focused on expanding the capacity of existing water systems and initiating new projects, including the Damongo, Tamale, and Yendi Water Supply Systems, in line with the President’s agenda to increase access to potable water under Sustainable Development Goal Six.
The MD has overseen preliminary works, including the necessary documentation at both GWL and its parent ministry, the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, with speed and dedication. He has ensured that the President is briefed at every stage to align the work with the national vision.
On March 31, 2026, he successfully secured the signing of the commitment by the Minister of Finance, paving the way for procurement and subsequent physical works later this year.
It was in recognition of these efforts that President Mahama publicly lauded Hon. Adam Mutawakilu, at the behest of Buipewura Jinapor II, the Gonjaland Youth Association, senior government officials, and the entire Gonjaland community.
