ECG Disconnects Ghana Water Over Nearly GH¢1 Billion Unpaid Debt

ECG Shuts Down Somanya Office Over Safety Concerns
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has disconnected Ghana Water Limited (GWL) from the national grid due to a staggering unpaid bill approaching GH¢1 billion.

This action, carried out on Tuesday, June 17, forms part of ECG’s ongoing nationwide revenue recovery and disconnection campaign targeting high-profile defaulters.

The disconnection underscores ECG’s resolve to enforce payment compliance among state institutions and private entities, in a bid to stabilize the financial health of the power sector. Officials say persistent non-payment has significantly strained operations.

Following the GWL cutoff, ECG’s task force also moved on to disconnect the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), which owes over GH¢3.1 million and reportedly failed to honor an agreed payment plan.

ECG has now given Ghana Water Limited a 48-hour deadline to clear its arrears or face an extended blackout at its main pumping stations, potentially disrupting water supply nationwide.
