Pooley’s death should be a turning point for Ghana’s dwindling football – Alex Akumey

Pooley’s death should be a turning point for Ghana’s dwindling football – Alex Akumey

Former Vice Chairman of the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA), Alex Ackumey, has stated that Ghanaian football gatekeepers must take lessons from the tragic death of Francis Yaw Frimpong, popularly known as Pooley, a devoted Asante Kotoko supporter, during a game against Nsoatreman.

He believes that Pooley’s passing should prompt a reassessment of how football is managed in the country.

Speaking on Plan B FM’s weekend sports show, hosted by Dan K. Pobi Okocha, Ackumey described the fan’s death as a “blessing in disguise” for Ghanaian football. He argued that the tragedy presents an opportunity for significant reforms to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Ackumey also called for support and patience for the new Minister of Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, in his efforts to revive the dwindling fortunes of Ghanaian sports.

Ghana’s Parliament confirmed the appointment of Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams as the new Minister of Sports and Recreation on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. His confirmation followed a thorough vetting process by the Appointments Committee, during which his qualifications, policy proposals, and vision for the ministry were scrutinized over several hours.
