Edem Agbana, the Deputy Youth Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress has said the oath of office sworn by their Members of Parliament is to the constitution and the good people of Ghana and not to any traditional leader. His statement came at the back of the comments of Ashantehene, Otumfou Osei Tutu II on the E-levy. Recalled that Otumfou Osei Tutu stated that, though the policies of the executive are to be subjected to scrutiny by the legislature, it should not lead to stalling government.
“We have been fortunate in our political journey to have moved on from a period of one political party dominating everything. Today, at least the two main political parties have all been in government. If we are honest, we will agree that there is no perfect government and there will never be as long as we have different points of view”, Otumfou said.
Edem Agbana who was speaking on the Gumbe Show on TV XYZ ( today December 14), explained that democracy has made it possible for all Ghanaians to participate in the governance of the country through their representative in Parliament; so to this end, the Members of Parliament hold allegiance to their constituents and not any traditional authority.
Edem Agbana further stressed that, unlike the governing New Patriotic Party, the NDC respects the views expressed by Otumfou Osei Tutu II, but they ( the NDC) will not connive with the government to impose hardships on the people of Ghana.
“… We ( the NDC) welcome the views of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, but the assurance we will give him is that, if the collaboration is to impose hardships on the good people of Ghana, the allegiance or the oath of office the MPs took is to the constitution and the good people of Ghana and not to any traditional leader”, he said.
