Abdul Issah Fatawu, a Communications Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tema West, has called for transparency and impartiality in appointments to leadership positions at Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC).
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nkosuonsem, hosted by Obidehyie Kofi Sekyi, Mr Fatawu raised concerns about the perceived political neutrality of the Electoral Commission, particularly regarding the appointment of its Deputy Chairperson.
He questioned the circumstances surrounding the appointment process, arguing that individuals entrusted with overseeing elections must demonstrate independence and remain free from partisan influence.
Mr Fatawu also referred to the political backgrounds and affiliations of individuals associated with the appointment process, suggesting that such considerations could raise questions about public confidence in the Commission.
He stressed the need for credible research, transparency and evidence-based assessments in evaluating individuals appointed to key electoral positions.
According to him, the Electoral Commission plays a critical role in safeguarding Ghana’s democracy, making public confidence in its independence essential as the country prepares for future elections, including the 2028 general elections.
Mr Fatawu’s comments add to the ongoing public debate over the appointment process, political neutrality and institutional independence, as well as the need to maintain public trust in Ghana’s electoral management body.
