Security Analyst, Lord Nana Appiah is calling for a radical response from the Ghana Police Service and the security agencies to combat the recent spate of increasing crime in the country.
Concerns have been raised about the safety of Ghanaians in recent times following the spate of killings coupled with the rise in armed robbery cases in the country which has created a cloud of insecurity and making many to question “How safe are we as Ghanaians?
Speaking on Plan B FM ‘Ebaanosen’ with Bohyeba Afriyie, Mr. Lord Nana Appiah cautioned all citizens to take security as a top priority.
“Fundamental system-wide change is needed, and the police cannot achieve this alone. The situation is gradually getting out of hand. A radical and immediate change in approach to fighting crime is needed, supported by sustained funding and mandated responsibilities, potentially through a new statutory framework. We need to end violence against citizens by preventing it, and bringing perpetrators to justice with the full force of police powers and the law,” he said.
Meanwhile, The Acting Director-General of the Public Affairs Department of the Ghana Police Service, ACP Kwesi Ofori, has assured that the Ghana Police Service is working to ensure peace and security in areas receiving attention because of violent crime.
He added that, as part of their strategy to combat crime, his outfit has deployed anti-robbery task forces in certain hotspots.
The Upper East Region, for example, recently got a 24-hour regional highway patrol unit to check violent crime on roads.
To help regional police commands deal with crime, ACP Ofori said the police administration is also working to build their capacities.
Currently, regional police commands receive support from the police headquarters in Accra.
