Reform Asset Declaration System To Combat Corruption – Lawyer Aidoo

A former Majority Leader in Parliament and MP for Tema West, Lawyer Abraham Osei Aidoo has called for a robust, a well-designed and structured asset declaration system, which will help in the fight against corruption among public officials.

The Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Mr. Joseph Whittal, on Thursday February 4, 2021 charged Members of Parliament (MPs) and government appointees to declare their assets in accordance with Act 550.

In an interview on Plan B FM Morning Show ‘Nkosuo Nsem’, The former Lawmaker has added his voice to the growing concerns of asset declaration among Members of Parliament and public officials before they take up any public positions.

“Proper asset declaration system can be used as a strong tool to prevent and detect corruption effectively, I will prefer the government to adopt a system whereby all assets that are declared by government officials, MPs will be incorporated in some sort of a national database” He said

“This will help in easy identification and easy tracking of public Officials as to what they have before they came into public service and what they’ve acquired after leaving office”

“This will detect corruption effectively, and eventually lead to successful conviction of corruption related offences by these public officials with regard to their assets before and after leaving public service,” He added

Lawyer Aidoo believes when these measures are put in place, it would ensure that all public institutions complied with the provisions of Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act,1998 (Act 550).
