Following the shutdown of the Royal Nursing College at Tafo Nyhiaeso by the Ghana Tertiary Education Council (GTEC), the wife of the college director, who is also the proprietress of a montessori school affiliated with the college, has been handed over to the police for prosecution, citinewsroom.com reports.

This was disclosed by the Deputy Director General of GTEC, Prof Augustin Ocloo.

According to him, the shutdown was necessary to safeguard the academic future of the more than 800 students reportedly enrolled.

“The best way to safeguard the future of the students is to close down the school and hand over the proprietress to the police to process her for court to defend herself.

“The institution was supposed to be affiliated with UCC, but we have been informed that UCC has withdrawn its affiliation,” citinewsroom quoted him as saying.

Prof Ocloo explained that the reason for her arrest is to explain to the court how students who were due for completion intend to do that, and also which other school will offer them a certificate.

“That is why we have sent the matter to court. The proprietress must now explain how she intends to address the situation of students who were due to complete, as it is unclear which institution will award them certificates,” he stated.

His comments follow reports that GTEC closed the institution after its management failed to comply with instructions and did not provide documentation confirming its accreditation status.

The college, located in the Ashanti Region, was, therefore, shut down pending resolution of those issues.

Prof Ocloo said that the college’s lack of proper registration and regulatory approval raised serious concerns about programme administration and academic standards.

He also added that accountability will be determined through the legal process while GTEC works to ensure affected students are not left stranded.
