The Tema Traditional Council has announced a customary ban on drumming and noise-making across the traditional area as part of preparations toward the annual Homowo Festival.
In a public notice issued on March 2, 2026, the Council stated that the ban will take effect from Friday, May 1 to Saturday, May 23, 2026.
According to the Council, the directive applies to individuals, social groups, institutions, churches, mosques and all social gathering places, including drinking spots, bars and pubs operating within the Tema Traditional Area.
During the period, the Council has also forbidden burial and funeral ceremonies, as well as any activities that generate excessive noise.
The directive will affect Tema Manhean (Newtown) and all communities under Tema, including Ashaiman, Zeenu, Kubekro, Adigon, Saasabi, Klangon, Adjei Kojo, Sakumono and Adjeiman.
The Council explained that the ban forms part of vital customary rites leading to the celebration of the Homowo Festival, which is observed annually by the Ga people to mark the harvest season and commemorate their history.
Authorities say compliance with the directive will help ensure the smooth performance of traditional rites and prevent possible confrontations between representatives of the traditional council and members of the public.
The notice was issued under the authority of the Tema Stool and the Nii Adjetey Agbo II, with the Council urging residents and institutions within the affected communities to respect and adhere strictly to the directive throughout the stated period.
