Mr Samuel Ziggah, a senior lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), has condemned the behaviour of students arrested in connection with a viral assault video involving a student from Obrachire Senior High School.
Describing the incident as “horrible and unfortunate”, Mr Ziggah called for the suspects to face the full rigours of the law to serve as a deterrent to others.
The arrest of three students follows a high-level meeting on February 23, 2026, between the Director-General of the CID, COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, and the management of the Swedru School of Business.
The suspects have been identified as Joseph Amoh, 20; Benedict Appiah, 18; and Bilal Mamud, 18.
All three are students of the Swedru School of Business.
According to police reports, the suspects are currently in custody and will face prosecution in court.
Mr Ziggah argued that despite their student status, the suspects should not be granted leniency.
He pointed out that given the nature of their actions, they should not be treated as juveniles because they were fully aware of the gravity of their conduct.
Commenting on the arrests, Mr Ziggah stated “The suspects deserve to be jailed so it will serve as a deterrent to others. “The way they attacked the student was brutal, and they have to be punished severely to serve as a deterrent.”
He further emphasised the need for a collaborative effort between parents and educators to restore discipline in the school system.
“Let us discipline our children. As parents, we must encourage the teachers to strictly enforce the implementation of the disciplinary measures in our schools. If they misbehave at home, we have to discipline them. I want to reiterate that these students arrested should get not less than two years in jail so after they serve their term, they will be reformed.”
Mr Ziggah noted that a lack of accountability in wider society is contributing to youth lawlessness.
He suggested that when leaders fail to sanction indiscipline, it emboldens the younger generation to misbehave under the belief that there will be no repercussions for their actions.
