Six men have sustained injuries after a Toyota Corolla veered off the Accra-Kumasi Highway and plunged into the Birim River at Biremso, near Anyinasin Junction in the Eastern Region.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) receiving a distress call at about 9:04 a.m.

A rescue team from the Bunso Fire Station, led by ADO II Dacosta Amankwah, was dispatched two minutes later and arrived at the scene at 9:11 a.m.

An eyewitness told the GNFS that he heard a loud crash and rushed towards the scene, where he found the black Toyota Corolla, with registration number GR 1425-18, submerged in the Birim River.

By the time firefighters arrived, members of the public had already rescued all six occupants from the vehicle and transported them to Hawa Saviour Memorial Hospital for treatment.

All six occupants, who were male, sustained injuries. No deaths were recorded.

The vehicle was extensively damaged in the crash, although some personal belongings were retrieved from the wreckage.

The circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the highway and plunge into the river remain unclear, with investigations ongoing.

The GNFS Eastern Regional Public Relations Office has urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly when travelling along highways and approaching sections where a loss of control could result in serious consequences.
