An armed robbery incident has been reported at Walewale in the North East Region after a mobile money vendor was attacked by a group of gun-wielding men in broad daylight.
The incident, which reportedly occurred on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, at about 2 pm, left residents concerned about the safety of mobile money vendors and other businesses operating in the area.
According to residents who spoke about the incident, the attack occurred after a man believed to be a Fulbe approached the mobile money vendor to conduct a money transfer.
The man reportedly handed over the money to the vendor to facilitate the transaction. However, shortly after the transaction began, a group of armed men allegedly appeared at the scene.
The suspects are said to have fired several gunshots, creating panic among people in the vicinity and forcing residents and passers-by to seek safety.
In the confusion that followed, the armed men allegedly seized the vendor’s money bag containing cash before making their escape.
The suspects are also alleged to have taken the motorbike belonging to the man who had gone to the vendor to send money.
Residents said the motorbike was particularly significant because the owner had reportedly purchased it only a day before the incident, making its loss an additional setback for him.
The circumstances surrounding the attack have generated concern among residents, particularly because the incident reportedly occurred in the afternoon when people were actively going about their daily activities.
Residents further claimed that the suspected robbers were also believed to be Fulani. However, the claim has not been independently verified, and the identities and backgrounds of the suspects remain unknown.
