The Ghana Police Service has cautioned vehicle owners against handing over their car keys to washing bay attendants to move or park their vehicles, warning that they could be held legally responsible if an accident occurs.
According to the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), allowing an unlicensed person to drive a vehicle is an offence and could expose the owner to legal consequences.
Speaking on the issue, Chief Inspector Frempong Ayeh advised motorists to either park and reposition their vehicles themselves or hand the keys directly to the owner of the washing bay instead of attendants.
“Drivers should park and move their own cars, or give the keys directly to the bay owner rather than random attendants,” he stated.
The MTTD explained that many washing bay attendants do not possess valid driver’s licences, making it unlawful for them to operate customers’ vehicles.
Police further warned that vehicle owners could be held liable if an attendant is involved in a road crash while driving their vehicle.
Beyond road safety concerns, the MTTD also highlighted reports of attendants allegedly driving customers’ vehicles without permission or leaving washing bays with ignition keys, urging motorists to exercise greater caution when handing over their vehicles.
