Police Arrest Three Over Drug Trafficking and GH¢100,000 Bribery Attempt in Eastern Region

The Eastern Regional Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with the unlawful possession of narcotics and an attempted GH¢100,000 bribery of law enforcement officers during an intelligence-led operation in the region.

The operation, conducted on May 10, 2026, by the Regional Police Intelligence Department (RPID), followed a tip-off about suspected narcotics being stored around Akosombo-Bonya. Acting on the intelligence, officers placed the area under surveillance and later intercepted a Hyundai Rhino truck with registration number GR 5724-15 near Krobo Girls Senior High School.

The vehicle was subsequently tracked to a secluded area near Atua Government Hospital, where officers observed suspects transferring sacks of suspected substances into a Howo Zonda Tipper Truck with registration number GN 7948-21. While several individuals fled the scene upon police intervention, the two vehicles and the cargo were successfully secured.

Police say shortly after the seizure, a 39-year-old welder, Solomon Tettey, who resides at Atua, approached officers claiming ownership of both the vehicles and the consignment. He allegedly admitted that the shipment—comprising about 1,600 parcels of suspected Indian hemp—was destined for Nigeria.

In a further development, Solomon Tettey is said to have attempted to compromise the investigation by offering GH¢100,000 to the officers handling the case. According to the police, the officers pretended to accept the offer in order to gather evidence. The suspect subsequently transferred GH¢90,000 via mobile money and handed over an additional GH¢10,000 in cash.

Following the transaction, officers, supported by the Regional Counter-Terrorism Unit (CTU) and the Odumase Police, moved in to arrest the suspect. Two alleged accomplices, Joshua Nartey and Teye Nartey, were later picked up after voluntarily reporting to the Regional Police Headquarters.

All three suspects are currently in custody and assisting investigations at the Regional Criminal Investigation Department (RCID), alongside the seized vehicles and suspected narcotics.

The Ghana Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting drug trafficking networks and maintaining integrity within law enforcement operations, stressing that efforts to bribe officers will not deter the pursuit of justice.
