A young man has been fatally shot by unidentified gunmen in a brazen daylight attack outside the main gate of the University of Benin in Benin City on Sunday, May 10, 2026.
According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers reportedly used another vehicle to block a Mercedes-Benz GLK before opening fire repeatedly on the driver at close range. The assailants fled the scene immediately after the attack.
The victim, believed to be a part-time student of the University of Benin, died on the spot. Disturbing videos circulating from the scene show the man slumped inside the vehicle, which was riddled with bullet holes on the windshield.
The incident sparked panic around the university community, drawing students, residents, and passersby to the scene in shock.
The vehicle involved was identified as a Mercedes-Benz GLK.
Authorities have yet to release an official statement as investigations are expected to commence.
