Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) practitioner Mary Bright Coffie has cautioned that over-pampering a spouse can create unrealistic expectations, eventually leading to resentment and conflict within the family.
Speaking on Plan B FM’s Nyansapo Fie, hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, she explained that constantly praising, excusing, or treating a partner as though they can do no wrong often makes them resistant to correction. According to her, when such behaviour goes unchecked, even the slightest disagreement can escalate into serious marital conflict.
Mary Bright Coffie stressed that couples should never dismiss seemingly minor issues, such as careless remarks or insults exchanged during disagreements. She warned that unresolved conflicts can gradually breed bitterness, create emotional distance, and, in some cases, result in separation if they are not addressed through honest communication and counselling.
She further noted that the effects of unresolved marital disputes extend beyond the couple, often impacting their children. According to her, children who are repeatedly exposed to tension at home may begin taking sides, with some aligning with their mother and others with their father. Such situations, she said, can create division within the family and strain the relationship between parents and their children.
Mary Bright Coffie, affectionately known as Aunty May, therefore urged married couples to be mindful of their words, actions, and body language, particularly in the presence of their children and other family members. She emphasized that mutual respect, patience, effective communication, and a commitment to resolving conflicts peacefully are essential to building a healthy and harmonious marriage.
