The death of a parent at an early age can have both positive and negative effects on a child, Rev. Michael Banson of Holy Fire Revival Ministries has said.
Speaking on Nyansapo Fie, Plan B FM’s family, relationship and lifestyle programme hosted by Akosua Gyamfua, Rev. Banson noted that individuals react differently to loss because emotions differ from person to person.
According to him, when someone loses a parent, people often focus only on the disadvantages, but there can also be advantages. He explained that some parents spoil their children, and losing a parent does not always end in bad news, as the experience can help some people become great in life.
He said early parental loss can help build resilience and empathy, and it shapes how people build relationships and achieve success.
Rev. Banson however noted that for some, losing a parent at an early age makes it difficult to get married, build relationships or even give birth, because they live in fear that they may also lose their loved ones.
He described parents as a source of encouragement and emotional security, adding that children who lose them may begin to doubt their own abilities.
Rev. Banson further advised organisations to have a good Human Resource system that provides emotional support to workers who have experienced such loss. He emphasised that if such support is provided well, the person can become better, but if not handled properly, it can have negative consequences.
